Cabin Gardening

Spruce up the outdoors of your Minnesotan or Wisconsin cabin with fresh color and life this growing season. Hardy perennials which are deer and pest resistant are perfect to enhance the beauty of your landscape. Below is a list of great flowers to add to your Minnesotan or Wisconsin garden for a garden that continuously blooms throughout the entire growing season.

1. Daffodils. Every spring, these bring yellow flowers bring joy to folks as they bloom across the harsh winter landscape.

2. Irises. Flowering in late spring and early summer, irises signal the official arrival of warmer months. Purple and white are the most common colors; however, there are countless varieties of these wonderful flowers. The only drawback to irises is that their blooms do not last very long and they only flower once every growing season.

3. Lilies. From day-lilies to tiger-lilies, these amazing flowers add a touch of flair to the plainest of spaces. Reliable every spring, some types of lilies continue to bloom throughout the summer with proper maintenance and care.

4. Peonies. Ranging from red, white and yellow, with delicate petals, peonies add a splash of color and a wonderful aroma to gardens throughout late spring and early summer.

5. Shrub Roses. For the novice gardeners, roses can sound like a challenge. While it is true that roses can be susceptible to disease and pests, choosing a variety fortified against these risks is likely to eliminate much of the problem. Also, a good rose spray and fertilizer will help do the trick to ensure that your roses continue to add color throughout the summer months.

6. Redbeckia Goldstrum. A perennial variety of Black-Eyed Susan, these yellow and black flowers add a dash of color to flower beds. While the plants typically bloom in summer and early fall, their hardiness makes them an ideal choice to survive over the harsh cold of Minnesota and Wisconsin winters.

7. Cone Flowers. Hardy, rugged and wild, cone flowers are a great flower to attract honey bees. They do not require any particular type of soil and are virtually fool-proof in most perennial gardens. While the most common varieties are purple, newly developed strains boast dramatic orange and yellow flowers.

8. Flowering Asters. Flowering asters produce petite daisy-like blooms in late summer and fall. They are extremely hardy and come in a variety of colors including white, red, pink, purple and white.

9. Dahlias. Perennial varieties of dahlias can be an excellent choice for flower gardens. With large, dramatic blooms in a wide variety of colors, dahlias are a gorgeous addition to the flowers beds and gardens of the upper Midwest region.

10. Ornamental Grasses and Evergreen Shrubs. Winter can be a pretty bleak time for your garden. Fortunately, ornamental grasses and evergreen shrubs are resistant even to the harshest of weather and can add a delightful bit of color to your garden over the cold winter months.

Add a touch of beauty to your garden here in Minnesota or Wisconsin to enhance the curb-appeal of your vacation home or cabin. Not only will it enhance the value of your property, it is sure to provide a serene, calm spot of beauty for the enjoyment of your family and friends here in the Northwoods.
