Our Cabin In the Woods

Shell Lake Cabin

Shell Lake is a beautiful, crystal clear lake that has been enjoyed by numerous individuals for generations. Researching the history of the lake, it was originally a Native American summering ground, a place to be refreshed and to seek respite from the heat. At the turn of the century, families from large cities, especially the Chicago area, would pack the families on a train and send the wives and children to spend entire summers in the small, rustic cabins or at the numerous family-owned resorts that dotted the shores of Shell Lake. Those children, in turn, would bring their families back to enjoy the summer in Shell Lake, many of them going back to the same cabins. (The small resorts have long ago disappeared.)

The cabin my husband and I purchased on a lovely lot in a secluded area of Shell Lake has a feel of “family” about it. The sturdy oak floor has wear marks, in certain sections, attributing to numerous feet passing over. When I sometimes sit in solitude in the cabin, especially on a beautiful moonlit night, I can almost hear the children talking about the fish they caught, the cousins next door and the fort they made in the big woods behind. I can see bathing suits and towels strung out to dry on the clothesline, which is still there. (Rummaging through a lofted area in the cabin, I even found the worn chintz clothespin bag with unusual wooden clothespins still tucked in the pocket!)

Other items were also left behind: items that gave me a clue to former occupants. There are paper fans with advertising from funeral homes that when unfolded form a beautiful picture, a heavy mix master on a a stand with odd attachments, various olive-green wool army blankets, old boxed games with pieces missing and childish writing covering some of the boxes, numerous mismatched cups, plates, pots and pans along with a metal chamber pot! All of these items have been disposed of and replaced, although it was done with a twinge of sadness on my part, knowing I was replacing not only “things” but perhaps also the memories of people who once so enjoyed this sweet cabin.

Our cabin in the woods sits quietly with some other relatives like it that bear a family resemblance. Like the others (many are being replaced with new cabins or homes) it is basic, sturdy and most of all, home. It’s its own unique “person” waiting (with many updates and accommodations) to provide loving, happy, summer memories for willing new families.

log cabin

As teachers, my wife and I know how important it is to experience new places, meet new people, alter lesson plans when needed, and take chances. Indeed, we have often visited new areas during our summer vacations, introduced ourselves to new students with revised lesson plans every fall, and finally, eleven years ago, we opted to take on an ultimate trial. Our leap into second home management began with the purchase of a sixty-five year old log cabin, with 100 foot of lake frontage in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

Thereafter, each spring would be an exciting time for our family, especially our two children when they knew we were headed north to open the cottage. However, a realization set in every winter also when we noticed that our kids were getting bigger while our primary residence was getting smaller. The solution, build a bigger roomier home with all the amenities that our current house did not have. There was a problem however, with a new house we could not afford to keep our summer log home, therefore we needed to sell.

After months of arduous soul searching, listing the pluses and minuses of both options, the decision was made, and a realtor contacted.

The night before the meeting with the realtor I invited our two children to accompany me out on the dock. The end of a long, hot summer day was nearing. A myriad of colors splashed lazily on the pristine waters of South Manistique Lake. Suddenly, the mournful wailing of a Great Blue Heron from a cove a few hundred yards away startled the children as they sat balanced on my lap at the end of the dock.

Eric, my six-year-old asked, “Dad, what is that sound?”

My nine-year-old daughter, Alex added, “Yeah, that was a really weird cry!”

I calmly reassured both of them that it was indeed just a bird and then proceeded to describe in detail what this ”eron” thing looked like. Alex then innocently offered, “Dad, will we ever have another log cabin?”

My wife, watching and listening intently back on shore began to weep softly. And just like that, another decision had been made.

Throughout this particular summer there were many more “dock questions” as I’ve so named them. However, the realization of how beautiful and pure this one scene with my children was, led me to two different thinking modes. The first is how we, as parents, sometimes take our surrounding land, woods, lakes, streams and rivers for granted and often are never satisfied with what we have. Secondly, we need to take the time to let our children enjoy, partake in and ingest what is out there beyond cartoons, video games and bigger, roomier homes.

Most assuredly, the time my wife and I now spend with our children at The Cabin is precious. A fossil on the shore line a grub eyed under a rock are only the beginning of what my children can learn in one day alone. We really do need to take our kids fishing, hunting, hiking and exploring. This vast expanse that we so seldom take advantage of today needs to be prodded, questioned, dissected and discovered by soft little hands. When we lead with a caring, nurturing hand, not only will our children be considerate and thoughtful to nature but also nature itself might in turn be more soothing and secure with us.

My wife and I almost lost the thousands and thousands of reference materials that were available to us, Up North.

We took a chance; we weighed the attributes, and remain steady in our conviction to retain our lake home ensuring that future members of our family can experience the fruitful assets of a field trip to the cabin.

LP Top Ten

I took some time to put together some September 2007 statistics. Below you will find the top ten lake property searches (by lake and city) on LakePlace.com. These stats are based on just under 3,000,000 page views for the month of September (2,986,482 to be exact). Page views were down from August, but this is the normal trend for LakePlace.com – we start dropping off a little bit in the fall and winter – and then start picking up again in the Spring. Anyway, here you go:

Lake Name Search Lake Size Market Size Median Price
1. Lake Superior Property info   266 listings   $499,900
2. Lake Minnetonka Homes 14,101 acres   302 listings   $1,050,000
3. Lake Mille Lacs Property 128,223 acres   218 listings   $299,900
4. Lake of the Woods Property 305,907 acres   20 listings   $299,000
5. Castle Rock Lake Property 13,955 acres   148 listings   $298,900
6. Lake Petenwell Property 23,040 acres   113 listings   $399,000
7. Lake Michigan Property info   11 listings   $210,000
8. Lake Winnebago Property 137,708 acres   96 listings   $399,900
9. Gull Lake Property 9,947 acres   199 listings   $749,900
10. Rainy Lake Property 44,732 acres   93 listings   $459,000

Note: Some of these numbers are going to be slightly off. 95% of Door County lake property listings were not included in the Lake Michigan numbers. Also, because there are multiple Gull Lakes in Minnesota, these numbers may be slightly skewed. All median prices reflect lake home prices and exclude undeveloped lake lot prices.

Top City Searches Market Size Lake Home Lake Lot
1. Hayward Lakefront Property 649 listings   $299,900   $162,000
2. Alexandria Lakefront Property 536 listings   $370,000   $139,000
3. Detroit Lakes Property 226 listings   $379,900   $150,000
4. Cumberland Lake Property 104 listings   $299,000   $119,000
5. Park Rapids Lake Property 321 listings   $289,000   $130,000
6. Ely Lakefront Property 148 listings   $350,000   $200,000

So those are the top 10 searches – by lake and city – for September 2007. If you have any questions about buying or selling a lake home or lake lot – please do not hesitate to contact us!

As always, happy lake home hunting!

23,000 Lake Maps

Sunday, October 14th, 2007

I posted about this a week or so ago – but I want to make sure I got my point accross. We recently launched a new feature – the Lake Finder. We often get questions about specific lakes…how big is the lake, etc…If you have a question about any lake in Minnesota or Wisconsin – be sure to visit our new lake finder tool. You can search Minnesota lakes and Wisconsin lakes by lake name or county. You will find an interactive map & satellite images with some really cool technology. Click and drag the red marker to find the geo codes (GPS coordinates) for any spot on the lake. It is pretty exciting stuff and we hope you will get some use out of it. If you know something about a certain lake – or you have a fishing report or fun/interesting story – be sure to leave a comment on the lake page!

Special Comment

Friday, October 12th, 2007

I wanted to share a couple of neat stories that came through LakePlace.com recently…A week or so ago, a soldier in Iraq (actually happens pretty regularly) requested a reservation from one of our cabin rental owners. He is going to be back in the States in May ’08 and wanted to celebrate his one year wedding anniversary with his wife at a cabin up north. My business partner and I love to see messages like this come through LakePlace.com.

Just a few minutes ago, this one came through on a lake home (for sale) listing:

I am now well into my 50′s. My uncle (Tony ****) owned this place in the 50′s and early 60′s. I spent much of my youth here. The breakfast nook looks exactly the same. I remember gathering berries and fishing for supper. I also remember some of the walls were made of a styrofoam type material that I got in a lot of trouble for picking at. Great memories though. The steps going down to the lake using natural tree roots as risers (barriers) for dirt stairs and cleaning fish at the lakeside table. We spent most of our evenings at the Pickeral Inn. This place gave me my love of natural wood. I now live in Camden, ME.

Breakfast Nook Crane Lake

It is so much fun to work at a place like this. The hours are long, but we love what we do…and these kind of emails can really make your day! Thanks, Ray!
