You might be from Minnesota if…

Thursday, August 31st, 2006

Just received this, thought I would share it with everyone…

You might be from Minnesota if…

If you’re proud that your state makes the national news 96 nights each Year, because International Falls is the coldest spot in the nation, you might live in Minnesota.

If your local Dairy Queen is closed from November through March, you might live in Minnesota.

If someone in a store offers you assistance, and they don’t work there, You might live in Minnesota.

If your dad’s suntan stops at a line curving around the middle of his forehead, you might live in Minnesota.

If you have worn shorts and a parka at the same time, you might live in Minnesota.

If your town has an equal number of bars and churches, you might live in Minnesota.

If you know how to say Wayzata, Mahtomedi, Edina, Shakopee ,Winton and Ely, you might live in Minnesota.

If you think that ketchup is a little too spicy, you might live in Minnesota.

“Vacation” means going up north past Virginia for the weekend.

You measure distance in hours.

You know several people who have hit deer more than once.

You can drive 65 mph through 2 feet of snow during a raging blizzard, without flinching.

You see people wearing hunting clothes at social events.

You install security lights on your house and garage and leave both unlocked.

You carry jumper cables in your car and your wife/girlfriend knows how
to use them.

There are 7 empty cars running in the parking lot at Zups Grocery Store at any given time.

You design your kid’s Halloween costume to fit over a snowsuit.

You consider Minneapolis exotic.

Your idea of creative landscaping is a statue of a deer next to your Blue spruce.

Down South to you means Iowa.

You actually understand these jokes, and you email a link to this post to all your Minnesota friends.

Aspen Colorado vs. Ely Minnesota

Aspen vs. Ely

Ely Minnesota Ely, MN BWCAW

Today I am going to give you some speculative information about a little, isolated real estate market in Northern Minnesota. If you live or have lived in Minnesota, you are probably aware of this little village up north, if you live anywhere else in the country, you have probably not heard of Ely Minnesota.

Ely (pronounced Ee-lee) is a small town of about 3,700 people, which sits right on the edge of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. The BWCAW is the largest wilderness preserve east of the Rockies – with more than 1 million acres of pristine forests and waterways – the vast majority of the lakes and rivers in the BWCAW are paddle only – meaning no motorized watercraft are allowed. Like Aspen (population 5,800), Ely’s economy is based purely on tourism.

I have been to Aspen several times – in both the summer and winter months, and you can take my word – these are two very different places. As much as Aspen is about full-length fur coats (men & women) and designer ski boots, Ely is about birkenstock sandals and mukluk boots. But the last time I was in Ely (July ’06), I noticed something a little different about the town. There were a heck of a lot more real estate companies – and a heck of a lot more Mercedes Benz and BMW automobiles parked up and down the main street. I noticed a shift taking place in Ely.

Like Aspen, Ely is an oasis for those who love outdoor adventure, this small town in Northern Minnesota is and was home to National Geographic photographers, Wall Street Journal freelancers, and North Pole explorers. The main street (Sheridan St.) is becoming more and more upscale with new restaurants, coffee shops, galleries and boutiques springing up everywhere and spilling over to off-main street locations. Heck, when the only radio station in a town of 3,700 (WELY – End of the Road Radio) is owned by the infamous journalist and broadcaster Charles Kuralt (before he passed away), you know it must be a very special place. In Charles Kuralt’s America he said: “It’s hard to be a stranger there. If your name is Charles, everybody in Ely calls you Chuck.”

As a real estate speculator & pundit (and somewhat of an authority on the vacation home market), I do not feel I am going out on a limb when I predict that Ely Minnesota will soon become a nationally recognized, high-end destination. Excellent city planning (including an airport with a 5,600 ft. runway that is suitable for private jets, corporate charters, and eventually non-stop flights from anywhere in the country) has created an infrastructure that can handle the growth – it’s all there – and I am not the only one talking about it. The September 2006 edition of National Geographic’s Adventure Magazine calls Ely Minnesota an Outdoor Mecca and one of the 31 Best Places To Live. In the past, National Geographic named Ely Minnesota one of the 50 Places of a Lifetime (must see).

As the Ely lakeshore property market becomes less about walleye and more about wine cellars I recommend getting in while the getting is good.

Acknowledgement: I borrowed the “less about walleye and more about wine cellars” line from an article Gene Rebeck, senior editor of Twin Cities Business, wrote about LakePlace.com – thanks Gene!

Take your daughter to work day!

daughter

Well, Friday is here! Not that it means anything around here…but this is a special Friday. Today my 7 year old daughter Ashley is in the office with me. As I type this entry, she is doing a “rock star make-over” at PollyPocket.com (wow – I just found that a certain online casino owns the domain “polleypocket.com” and redirects you to their online gambling hall – that is pathetic.) Anyways, we are having fun working on our own projects – but I have found out that she is extremely fast at creating new “make-overs” and she insists on hearing my opinion before printing each one…so, I am also becoming an expert-level user at PollyPocket’s website.

Ashley is also a blogger – well, she will be when I get some time to help her figure everything out a little more. A while back we set up her own blog titled: French Immersion School (www.frenchimmersionschool.com). She plans on updating it daily this year as she starts her 3rd year (second grade) at L’Etoile du Nord. If you are not familiar with immersion schools – they are really awesome…If you have young children, keep an eye on Ashely’s blog to get a 2nd graders perspective! About Immersion schools – from the time your child walks in the doors for kindergarten – it is French (or Spanish or whatever) only. They speak no English during school hours – all subjects are taught in French. You would be amazed at how fast children pick up a second language. Ashely is already very close to fluent (after 1st grade), and the school tells us that she will speak with a native tongue by the time she graduates 6th grade (meaning that even the French born will not recognize an English accent.) Tests also show that children who learn a second language at an early age tend to “rise above” in all other areas (including English) of academics.

So, I’m done ranting and raving about my daughter. I have two more daughters (teenagers, and not interested in spending a summer day in dad’s office) who I think just as highly of, but I am afraid I will scare you away if I move on to there accomplishments…so I will save them for another day. I have to get back to dressing up rock stars at PollyPocket.com. Have a great weekend – Go Vikes!

Grand Rapids, MN

Welcome to Grand Rapids, MN.  A great (and rapidly growing) city in Northern Minnesota lakes country.  Grand Rapids is located in the heart of Itasca county – which is home to more than 1,000 lakes and 1,000 miles of snowmobile and cross-country ski trails.  Some of the more popular lakes in the area include Pokegama Lake, Bowstring Lake, Wabana & Lake Winnie.  If you are thinking about purchasing Grand Rapids lakeshore property – you may want to check out the Deer River lake property market as well – Deer River is very close to Gr. Rapids and the markets are very much intermingled.
We hope you find what you are looking for – if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us!  Happy lake home hunting!

Lake Superior – The Northshore

Monday, August 21st, 2006

Lake Superior North Shore

My wife and I were stood up last week because of the beauty of the Northshore of Lake Superior…seriously. My aunt and uncle from Texas were in town last week for a convention. They decided to spend one day (the day before we were supposed to hang out) along the Northshore of Lake Superior. Well, they had so much fun up north, my aunt called and cancelled our dinner plans because they were just “too tired” and decided to take an earlier flight back. So what did they do? They visited the Split Rock Lighthouse, Gooseberry Falls, & Canal Park – all in one day (including a round-trip from Minneapolis). That is a lot to see in one day…especially if you are from Texas (everyone in the North knows that the South moves at a little slower pace).Â

Anyway, so what is my point? I guess my point is that the Northshore of Lake Superior is an extremely beautiful place. Once you visit it, you will know what I mean. LakePlace.com features a couple of great Lake Superior resorts, dozens of Lake Superior vacation rentals, and virtually every Lake Superior property on the market.  This is one of those special places that has to be on your “MUST SEE” list.
